Grieving superstar Kanye West, in his first public appearance since the death of his mother Dr. Donda West a week ago, broke down onstage in Paris when he attempted to perform "Hey Mama."
Attendees say that West started to introduce the song but couldn't continue. Video shows him onstage with his head buried in his hands. At first, the stunned audience was quiet but began to yell encouragement and then started to applaud.
Video obtained by concreteloop.com was shot from a distance, but it appears that Kanye is onstage crying while the opening music to "Hey Mama" plays behind him.
Attendee Lesly Nassilla told concreteloop.com "I live in Paris and yesterday, during his concert over here, Kanye broke down in tears trying to perform 'Hey Mama' It was just sooo emotional a lot of people were also crying."
Though Kanye cancelled his planned performance on the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show last week, he decided to continue with a European tour scheduled to start in Paris on Saturday and go through the month, ending in the UK. He will fly back to the U.S. for his mother's funeral Tuesday in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
West, his fiancee Alexis Phifer and her son arrived at the Hotel Le Meurice in Paris on Friday according to People.com.
West has not publicly commented since his mother's death, but the Kanye West Foundation has released a statement thanking everyone for "the outpouring of support and kind words that have come in from across the country."
Instead of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Dr. West's name to Kanye West Foundation/Loop Dreams Teacher Training Institute at 8560 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069. Donations may also be made at the Kanye West Foundation at www.kanyewestfoundation.org.
Keep your head up, Yeezie. I hope he can find solace in the many prayers and well-wishes that are being sent to him.
