The Roots Crew Moves On
2007 is the first year since 1993 that The Roots have not physically released (on CD or vinyl) any new music. This does not include the iTunes only "Marathon Man," a song they didn't even want to release in that version. There is a first time for everything so bring on 2008. I just heard a rumor that "Rising Down" is done and is set for April 29.
"Rising Down" will mark The Roots' eighth full-length studio album. The title is once again inspired by a literary piece, although this time a seven-volume set called (also available in an equally dense, yet much shorter, one volume redux) "Rising Up and Rising Down" by William T. Vollmann. We don't know the significance of this title at this time.
Some Roots purist types might express concern over the future of the group since the recent retirement of Leonard "Hub" Hubbard. These are the same fans who claim to not like a Roots album since "Things Fall Apart," which can be considered the band's last real collaboration with Malik B. Like Malik, Hub's leaving is not the first time the group has undergone a line up change. As they currently stand, the touring outfit consists of Black Thought, ?uesto, Maldog, Capt. Kirk, F Knuckles, Tuba Gooding and newbie Owen Biddle.
